Botulism

Botulism is a serious and severe form of food poisoning that is toxic to the nervous system. Symptoms will occur within a few days of ingesting the toxin. If you notice any of these symptoms, you will need to be evaluated by a physician as soon as possible to avoid life-threatening complications.

Botulism Symptoms

The symptoms of botulism may include any combination of the following:

  • weakness
  • fatigue
  • blurred or double vision
  • drooping eyelid
  • dry mouth
  • sore throat
  • slurred speech
  • difficulty swallowing
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • Diarrhea

Infants may present with a feeble cry and an inability to suck.

Botulism Causes

This serious form of food poisoning results from ingesting foods contaminated by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. This bacteria may develop in raw or improperly canned or preserved foods, especially meats (ham and sausage), or some vegetables (green beans).

The bacteria will be destroyed if the foods are cooked at 176°F (80°C) for 30 minutes or boiled at 212°F (100°C) for 10 minutes. Raw honey should not be given to infants under 1 year old because it could cause botulism.

Botulism Diagnosis

A diagnosis of botulism first comes from the observation of the aforementioned symptoms. When botulism symptoms are noticed it is vital to contact your health care facility for an evaluation by a physician as this condition can be fatal if not treated properly. This medical evaluation should include a discussion as to the possible source of the toxin, specifically an inquiry into what the person has eaten over the past few days. In addition to a physical examination, blood tests may be used to formulate the full diagnosis.

Botulism Treatment

When it comes to treatment, early detection and treatment with antitoxin is extremely important. An outbreak of botulism is a public health emergency and the local health department should be notified if botulism is discovered so the source of the contamination can be brought under control. Hospitalization may be necessary depending on the extent of the symptoms.
