Cystitis
aka Bladder Infection
A bladder infection (cystitis) can be uncomfortable and create a burning sensation and more frequent and urgent urination. However, symptoms can typically be controlled without lasting complications.
Bladder Infection Symptoms
An inflammation of the bladder typically include:
- Burning sensation upon urination
- More frequent and urgent urination
- Presence of blood in the urine
- Low fever
- Pain in the abdomen or low back.
Bladdar Infection Causes
Bladder infections are more common in women than men. The infection can be caused by bacteria that enter the urinary system from the outside (i.e. following sexual intercourse, or following a bowel movement). Risk of infection can be lowered by proper hygiene, wearing cotton undergarments and other common hygiene practices.
Bladder Infection Diagnosis
If the aforementioned symptoms are noticed an individual should consult with their doctor to determine the type of infection and if there are any complicating conditions present. The doctor may conduct a physical examination including urinalysis or cystoscopy (the use of a scope to look inside the bladder) in order to formulate a proper diagnosis.
Bladder Infection Treatment
After gaining a proper diagnosis the doctor may prescribe antibiotics and the following home remedies may provide some relief of symptoms:
- Warm baths may ease discomfort
- Women may find that pouring warm water over the genital area during urination may help ease the pain
- Drinking additional glasses of water is strongly recommended and helps flush out bacteria in the bladder
- Empty your bladder when the urge hits. Do not postpone urination because this can allow bacteria to multiply
- Following a bowel movement, women should avoid wiping from back to front
- Quit smoking, especially if you are prone to recurrent bladder infections. Smoking can irritate the lining of the urinary tract.
- Dress in loose fitting clothing and wear cotton undergarments.
