Abscessed Tooth

An abscess is a collection of pus. If this pus accumulates around the tooth root, the condition is called an abscessed tooth.

Symptoms – May include a persistent toothache that is intensified by biting down. Swelling or enlarged lymph nodes may be noticed on the neck or closer to the ear. Some persons may also feel pain in the ear and develop a fever.

Cause – An abscessed tooth usually results from bacteria that invade deep into the tooth through a cavity (Tooth Decay). An abscess may also form due to trauma to a tooth or Periodontal Disease.

Diagnosis – Observation of the aforementioned symptoms and evaluation by a dentist. The evaluation may include a dental examination and x-rays.

Treatment – The abscess can be drained through an incision or opening by a dentist who may also prescribe pain relievers or antibiotics (to control the bacterial infection). Over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetominophen may help control minor pain.
